Wow, what an interesting story. I feel a great deal of compassion for this dear. I am glad that sweet and concerned Rosy was able to identify the animal's suffering, and flag it for your attention in order that it be freed. What an amazing dog!

Frankie is now about 18.5 inches and our last attempt at weighing was 36.1 lbs ten days ago. I still wonder when the vertical height generally stabilizes and they mainly just fill out. Kooikerhodje Gianticus. Would love to see more photos of litter D!

Toby is probably a serious contender for biggest kooiker of litter D. He is 18.5 inches and a whopping 42 lbs. Stocky and muscular.

I tried to measure Darby after work and he's about 17" with lots of squirming going on. I think he's close to 30 lbs. I'll have to get a weight on him.
I've had several people comment on his size, they think he's the perfect size dog. I've grown up with Collies and German sheperds so I'm used to larger dogs. Darby is perfect, a big, sturdy dog in a small package. He still manages to trample me in bed though!

Our older kooiker, Rosie made that face often when we first brought her home, at age 4.5 yrs. She'd lower her head, crack that toothy grin, wag her tail and wiggle frenetically. The breeder assured us that it's not an aggressive snarl (which it certainly didn't look to be). We called it her "Smiley Fairy Dance," because she had lived on "Smiley Ferry Rd" before we adopted her. After a few months, as she became more confident in her new home, she stopped doing that lovely, charming dance. Even later, I came across a description of exactly that behavior in a book on dog communication, and read that dogs often do it as a gesture of appeasement, a reassurance that the "smiler" means no harm. I guess Rosie had become so sure of herself (as reigning diva) that she no longer needed to appease everyone she met. So far, we've never seen Dragon make that face.

Thanks for the update, Aki! I was at the Dutch Kooikerhondje Match earlier this month, and met someone from Hong Kong who had gotten a kooikerhondje from your home city of Nagano! It was truly an international event.

I have had a dutch decoy for the past almost 5 years. He was a neighborhood stray and very young. Who can turn away a puppy in the cold? We've been wondering what kind of dog he is until we saw a show on animal planet. Ours looks remarkably identical. However, Ringo, our dog, has a mostly black coloring with a lot of whispy hair. I'd love to send you a pic and maybe you can settle my family's almost 5 year old question. He's still my buddy no matter what, but I'm very curious.

Bristow has the same face! I was concerned about it at first, thinking he was snarling, but when I spoke with our trainer about it, he said believe it or not Bristow is smiling. It's not the prettiest smile, but I think he's handsome!
